The SMME Conference is hosted in partnership with the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and its agencies, the Small Enterprise Funding Agency (SEFA) and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA). The plenary sessions will focus on the following key themes: access to procurement opportunities, access to funding opportunities, training/development & incubation programmes and how SMMEs can enhance their access to local and global export markets.

The Opening Plenary

The opening plenary is a high-level session that focuses on macro-economic policy issues affecting trade and investment across sectors and nations. Speakers from government, industry, private sector, regional bodies and representatives, unpack the challenges and opportunities that exist in the SMME sector.

  • The objective is to highlight challenges, initiatives, issues that leaders face and to critically analyse the current policy frameworks and their effectiveness in addressing matters raised.
  • The efficacy of current trade agreements or the non-existence thereof, cross-border trade facilitation, preferential trade agreements, etc.

SMME Roundtables

Roundtable 1: Hosted by Small Enterprise Funding Agency (SEFA)

  • This Roundtable, convenes stakeholders such as the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), Small Enterprise Funding Agency (SEFA), Commercial Banks and similar organisations from other countries. These are development finance institutions with a special focus on Small and Medium Sized Businesses.
  • They will present in more detail their funding requirements, financial tools, programmes to assist SMMEs and other relevant information that will be useful to SMMEs.

The SMME workshops will be run concurrent to the main Conference for the duration of the week. The aim of this programme is to ensure that SMMEs benefit from meaningful sessions with relevant experts, for the duration of the week. The workshops are meant to be practical and to enrich SMMEs with information, contacts and networks that will assist them to take their businesses to the next level.

To empower SMMEs, the GBSE SMME Toolkit will be distributed at no cost to those who attend the workshops. The SMME Toolkit is a comprehensive information kit that all SMMEs need to have with all key components of running and sustaining a small business. It compresses key information and contacts into one portable resource centre for SMMEs.
